âLook, down there!â Okira cried from atop her precarious perch. âI think I see apples.â
Brother Hawk gave a short chirp from beneath her.
The dried kelp and vine saddle theyâd cobbled together made travel easier, though not comfortable. Still, Okira preferred being atop Brother Hawk rather than dangling from his claws, even if the twisted kelp ropes cinching her legs to his sides cut into her thighs. If one snapped, or he had to roll to the side to avoid an attack, it was quite likely that sheâd come free and fall to the waters beneath.
The water wouldnât kill her, of course, but their travels were difficult enough without the acolytes on their trail.
Looking down at the steep ocean waves, she felt the pang of longing again along with a stab of fear. The bell had sounded. She could no longer deny that fact. The ocean had called to her, and the name it called was âOkiraâ in the language of the merfolk. She had instinctively recognized it the moment she heard it.
Brother Hawk tilted his wings to the right and angled his path closer to the island, circling around the shores, mindful of hidden threats in the foliage.
The large tree, festooned with bright-yellow apples, sat on the highest peak of the island, a small glade surrounding it. Between the glade and the ocean, a briar patch thick with thorns guarded against entry. At least from the sea.
A layer of succulent grasses and wildflowers grew under the spreading arms of the apple tree. A peaceful and inviting island, save for the thorns. Dappled sunlight filtered through the branches, making it more inviting to the flight-weary travelers.
âIâm not sure if the thorns are to keep people out or keep something in,â Okira said. âBut we need food, and rest. We can always fly out if anything happens.â
Brother Hawk squawked again and twisted in midair, descending into the glade.
He pulled in his wings for a dive, and Okira instinctively leaned down to make less resistance. He dove into the small area between tree and brambles then nosed up and spread his wings to catch a big draft and slow their descent, landing in a smooth glide right beside the tree.
Okira slid to the ground, allowing Brother Hawk to shift back to human while she surveyed the surroundings.
Golden apples littered the clearing, their ripe aroma almost heady in the warm air. At the base of the tree, a small stream bubbled up to the surface. Okira dipped a finger in, tasting it.
âThis is the sweetest water Iâve ever had,â she said then lowered herself to the edge of the spring where she greedily sucked in mouthfuls, splashing her skin and hair in the process.
âOkira, be careful, this island is...strange.â
She looked up where Brother Hawk was pulling his tunic up over his hips, his broad naked chest glistening with sweat from the long flight. His brow furrowed as he scanned the clearing, his muscles tense as though waiting to pounce.
âWhat is it?â she asked, jumping back to her feet.
